Perioperative Nutrition: Enhancing Patient Recovery from Surgery

Extended interventions in abdominal surgery can be associated with severe complications such as the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis, which are the main causes for fatal postoperative outcome. Regulation of the immune response plays an important role in the pathogenesis of such postoperative conditions. It has been increasingly reported that administration of n-3 fatty acids is beneficial in patients with inflammatory processes. Prof. Calder will discuss the clinical efficacy and ongoing research of perioperative administration of n-3 fatty acids on the postoperative course of patients with surgical interventions. » more

Surgery can be associated with severe complications such as the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis, which are the main causes for fatal postoperative outcome. Regulation of the immune response plays an important role in the pathogenesis of such postoperative conditions. It has been increasingly reported that administration of omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial in patients with inflammatory processes. Whether omega-3 fatty acids have a role in an enhanced recovery programme is not fully tested but there is a rationale for this. Prof. Calder will discuss the clinical efficacy and ongoing research of perioperative adminstration of omega-3 fatty acids on the postoperative course of patients with surgical interventions and will consider the role of omega-3 in an enhanced recovery programme. » more

Asia Physiology And Coronary Imaging 2019

Invasive coronary angiography is currently the gold standard for diagnosing coronary artery disease (CAD) but there are inherent limitations. In many instances, one needs to examine the artery beyond what is seen on angiography. The fi eld of interventional cardiology have witnessed two key developments: 1. Advent of intracoronary imaging which has allowed clinicians to understand the pathophysiology of coronary atherosclerosis and evaluate the effectiveness of new intravascular devices. 2. Advent of pressure wire which has shifted the focus of CAD from anatomical to physiological assessment. Asia Physiology And Coronary Imaging (APACi) is a meeting with the specifi c aim of propagating the use of intracoronary imaging and physiological assessment in Asia. Our program will be very focused, practical and interactive. This meeting is designed to facilitate hands-on learning with guaranteed exposure to acquire new skills on: • Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) • Optical Coherence Imaging (OCT) • Fractional Flow Reserve/Instantaneous Wave-free Ratio (FFR/iFR) • Quantitative Flow Ratio (QFR) Much emphasis will be placed on proper data acquisition, data interpretation and appropriate decision-makingin each workshop. There will be succinct lectures from key opinion leaders and case presentations by experts illustrating the use of different modalities in clinical trial practice. » more
